Privacy notice
The short version: we ask for your email address and nothing else, we use it only to send the newsletter you asked for, and we never sell it. You can leave at any time.
Who we are
Carry & Compound is an independent publication that explains how private markets work, through this website, our videos and a free email newsletter. In this notice, “we” and “us” mean Carry & Compound. We decide how and why your data is used, which makes us the “controller” under European and UK data protection law and the organisation responsible under Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act.
For any privacy question or request, including as our data protection contact, email [email protected].
What we collect
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You sign up for the newsletter | Your email address. We don’t ask for your name or anything else. | To send you the newsletter you asked for. |
| While you’re subscribed | Records our email provider keeps about the subscription: when and where you signed up (including the link or campaign that brought you, if any), that you confirmed, and whether each email was delivered, opened or had a link clicked. | To prove you opted in, to keep the list healthy (for example, removing addresses that bounce) and to see which topics readers find useful. |
| You visit the website | Standard technical data, such as your IP address and browser type, handled by our hosting provider to deliver and protect the site. | To run the site and keep it secure. |
| You email us | Your email address and whatever you choose to write. | To reply to you. |
We don’t collect payment details, and we don’t buy or rent email lists.
Signing up and leaving
- Double opt-in. After you enter your address, we email you a link to confirm it. You only join the list once you click it, so nobody can sign you up without your say.
- Unsubscribe at any time. Every email has an unsubscribe link. One click and we stop sending. You can also email us and we’ll do it for you.
- What you’ll get. The newsletter, every other Thursday, plus the occasional note about our lessons and courses. Nothing from anyone else.
Who handles your data for us
We use a small number of service providers. They handle your data only on our instructions and for the purposes in this notice.
- Beehiiv (beehiiv Inc., United States) runs our newsletter: the sign-up form, sign-up attribution, the subscriber list and the emails. It acts as our processor under its data protection addendum. See also Beehiiv’s privacy policy.
- Cloudflare hosts and protects this website.
- Google provides the email inbox we use to answer your messages.
No selling, no ad networks
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal data, and we don’t share it with anyone for advertising. We don’t take part in Beehiiv’s advertising network or its data-enrichment services, and we don’t add you to anyone else’s list.
Cookies and the sign-up form
This site runs no analytics, and nothing from Beehiiv loads when you simply visit a page. Our sign-up boxes show a “Sign up” button first. Only when you press it do we load two things from Beehiiv:
- The sign-up form. When it loads, Beehiiv and the security services it uses to block spam and automated sign-ups may set cookies or read similar data in your browser. Those are Beehiiv’s cookies, covered by Beehiiv’s privacy policy.
- Beehiiv’s attribution script. It tells us how you found the newsletter. If the page address carries a campaign tag (for example, from a link in one of our videos), it saves that tag, the page you landed on and the referring site in two small cookies on this site,
attribution_dataandbhv_attribution, kept for up to 30 days. That information is passed to Beehiiv with your sign-up, so we can see which links bring readers in. It isn’t used for advertising.
Our newsletter page at carrycompound.beehiiv.com is also run by Beehiiv and works the same way. If you’d rather not load anything from Beehiiv on this site, email us and we’ll add you; you’ll still get the confirmation link.
Where your data is stored
Beehiiv stores subscriber data in the United States. Where your data is transferred from the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, it is protected by the standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose (with the UK addendum where relevant), which form part of Beehiiv’s data protection addendum. For readers in Singapore and elsewhere, we rely on those same contractual protections to keep your data to a comparable standard.
Our legal basis (EU and UK readers)
- Sending the newsletter: your consent, which you give by confirming your sign-up and can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
- Sign-up source, delivery and open or click records, site security and replying to emails: our legitimate interests in running a reliable, secure publication and in answering readers. You can object at any time.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address while you’re subscribed. When you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you and keep only a record that the address has unsubscribed, so we don’t contact you again by mistake. If you ask us to delete your data altogether, we will, unless we need to keep a record to show we’ve honoured your request. Emails you send us are kept only as long as we need them to deal with your message.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to tell you what data we hold about you, correct it, delete it or stop using it, and you can withdraw your consent at any time. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to receive a copy in a portable format, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to complain to your data protection authority: for example, the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK, your national authority in the EU, or the Personal Data Protection Commission in Singapore. Readers in US states with privacy laws have the rights those laws give them; we don’t sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising. Email [email protected] to make a request. We may need to confirm the request comes from the owner of the address, and we’ll reply within one month.
Children
The newsletter is written for adults. Please don’t sign up if you are under 16.
Changes to this notice
If we change how we use your data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change matters to subscribers, we’ll tell you in the newsletter first.
